The Patagonian Hare by Claude Lanzmann. For a guy who made the 9.5 hour cinematic tour-de-force, Shoah, I'm surprised his memoir weighs in at under 600 pp. But this is one hell of a life, and to read this book is to enlarge oneself. It might be time to revisit his brilliant movie, too.
