The Elephanta Suite by Paul Theroux.. Three novellas about the seductions and anachronisms of life in India reflect off of one another like a house of mirrors. Beautiful prose, as always from this master, where setting takes precedent over the characters at times, but to good effect.

Joel Gardner, LitSnap Editor

"Theroux's real strength lies in his examination of the rifts and bridges between languages. The "Indian habit of monologue" is juxtaposed by the American need to reference things to a fiscal touchstone.."

The Independent

"Theroux's strength as a writer and a traveler has always come from his readiness to say and do what few of us would admit to, and it's a safe bet that these gleefully impenitent stories will not be promoted by the American Chamber of Commerce or the Indian Ministry of Tourism.."

Author bio: Paul Edward Theroux was born on April 10, 1941 in Medford, Massachusetts. The son of a French-Canadian father and an Italian mother, Theroux was one of seven children. Never much of an athlete, Theroux spent most of the 1950's reading. He never admitted, even to himself, his desire to be a writer and studied premed in college. Writing, he believed to be "incompatible with being a man--money is masculinity". More information can be found here:
