Author bio: David Goldfield is the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, he grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and attended the University of Maryland. He is the author of many works and textbooks on Southern American history.
