A Small Hotel by Robert Olen Butler.. Could be you had a divorce like this one. This novel is a very dark, but ultimately rewarding look at a fundamental fact of modern marriage, both subtle and compelling.

Joel Gardner, LitSnap Editor

"Not appropriate for cynical readers, this novel culminates in a pretty dramatic flourish. But for those of us capable of enjoying a good romance, Mr. Butler’s story of a long-married couple who have decided to break up delivers."

The New York Times

"Through the memories of these flawed, but essentially decent characters, Butler paints a stark portrait of each one's emotional needs, the roots of their longing established in early childhood, as he exposes how the inability to satisfy those hungers has scarred an outwardly happy marriage."

The Star Tribune
